Sakkara. Journey to this vast necropolis for the ancient capital of Memphis. Visit the Mastaba of Mereruka, the Pyramid Tomb of King Teti and the Step Pyramid of Djoser, considered the first pyramid. Break for lunch afterward at a nearby restaurant. The Pyramids of Giza. Marvel at the awe-inspiring Great Pyramid of Giza, the sole surviving and oldest monument of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The largest of the three Old Kingdom pyramids in the complex, this masterpiece of ingenious engineering was built for the pharaoh Khufu out of roughly 2.3 million massive blocks of stone. Stand before the imposing Sphinx that crouches nearby.
Islamic Cairo. Discover Cairo’s many mosques. Pass through the walls of the Citadel, a medieval Islamic fortress complex, to visit the Mosque of Mohammed Ali, also known as the Alabaster Mosque. Continue to the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan and the grand Al-Rifai Mosque, where many members of Egypt’s modern royal family are entombed. Free Time: Explore the colorful Khan el Khalili bazaar. Relax over a delicious lunch of Egyptian specialties. Egyptian Museum. Opened in 1902, this famed landmark contains priceless Egyptian antiquities including the complete burials of Yuya, Thuya and Psusennes I, and the fabulous treasures of Tanis.
Check out of the hotel this morning and fly to Luxor. Luxor Museum. Admire impressive artifacts from the temples and necropolis of ancient Thebes. Check in to the Sonesta St. George Hotel Luxor. The Temple of Luxor. Sail along the Nile aboard a felucca to this sprawling temple, one of ancient Egypt’s most important religious complexes.
After breakfast, check out of the hotel. Luxor’s West Bank — The Valleys of the Kings and Queens. Explore several tombs today, including that of King Tutankhamen, in this spellbinding region where New Kingdom pharaohs and their families awaited immortality. Below dramatic limestone cliffs, walk up the ramp that leads to the striking Temple of Queen Hatshepsut designed with colonnaded terraces. After a stop at an alabaster workshop, visit the tomb of Amun-her-Khepeshef featuring superbly preserved murals, and see the majestic Colossi of Memnon. Embark the Sonesta St. George I, and enjoy lunch. Epigraphic Survey of the Oriental Institute, University of Chicago (Chicago House). Learn how the Survey preserves Egypt’s ancient heritage through documentation, conservation and restoration during an exclusive visit. Delight in a belly-dancing performance this evening.
The Temple of Karnak. Visit this immense royal burial place which includes a great hypostyle hall with 134 gigantic sandstone columns. Free Time: After lunch on board, enjoy some leisure time as the ship transits the Esna Lock.
Revel in the Nile scenery on your way to Edfu. The Temple of Horus at Edfu. At this well-preserved shrine, study reliefs that offer details about ancient religious rituals and political life. As the ship sails to Kom Ombo, gain insights during an engaging discussion with an Egyptologist. Temple of Sobek and Haroeris. Explore this unusual, double temple complex dedicated to the crocodile-headed Sobek, god of fertility, and the falcon-headed Haroeris, god of the sky. Tonight, enjoy a traditional Nubian show on the ship.
After the ship docks in Aswan, fly to Abu Simbel. Abu Simbel. Visit the spectacular Great Temple of Ramses II carved out of a sandstone cliff along the Nile, and admire the finely preserved temple nearby dedicated to the goddess Hathor. Fly back to Aswan. After some free time, enjoy a festive Farewell Reception and Dinner on the ship this evening.
After breakfast, disembark the ship in Aswan. Temple of Philae and Aswan High Dam. Sail by felucca for a tour of this island temple dedicated to the goddess Isis. After a visit to the Papyrus Institute to learn how ancient papyrus was made, see the High Dam, an engineering marvel. Fly from Aswan to Cairo, then relax in your evening room at the InterContinental City stars Cairo before an early morning departure for your return flights home.
